Job Title – Flight Ground Maintenance Engineer (Avionics) Lead

The Ground Maintenance Engineer (Avionics) will support the Assembly, Integration, and Testing of the PHASA 35 High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) solar powered UAV for flight both in the UK and overseas. In addition, they may be required to support customers in preparing their payloads for integration and external company liaison for associated work activities.

Tasks and Accountabilities

As part of this role you will be responsible for undertaking activities such as: –

  • Lead maintenance and manufacturing tasks on the air system
  • Lead a team of multi disciplined maintenance engineers
  • Deputise for the Ground operations Manager if required.
  • Project manage tasks as directed by the Ground Operations Manager
  • Participate in management meetings and provide detailed sitreps to the Ground Ops Manager
  • Support test flight trials inside and outside of UK, specifically preparing avionics for flight.
  • Candidates must have a practical avionics / electronics engineering background with an ability to work as a team member as well as occasionally unsupervised on own initiative, have good analytical skills, with the ability to identify a problem, interact with the right stakeholders and provide a solution. The candidate may be expected to contribute to work packages and present results to managers and peers.
  • Contribute to the generation of test plans, organising and presenting at test readiness review boards.
  • Support qualification and acceptance testing, recording/analysing results, presenting at test review boards and generating end item data packs.
  • Carry out analysis tasks from flight data.
  • Work with Lead System Engineer to ensure flight readiness.
  • Run test procedures, collect data, and write up technical reports.
  • Provide input into design from a Flight Ground maintenance perspective.
  • Support quality and product assurance.
  • Support internal, external, and customer audit activities.
  • Engage with customers and key stakeholders.

Required Skills; Essential

  • HND level in Engineering, Physics, or Electronics or equivalent experience.
  • Hands on experience in wiring harnesses, soldering and testing complex electronic systems, preferably in the aviation or space industry
  • Knowledge of electronic/software/embedded system acceptance test and qualification criteria.
  • A driven, self-motivated, committed individual with a passion for innovation.
  • Ability to work unsupervised or as part of a team, with a positive and proactive attitude.
  • Reliable in respect of quality and timeliness of deliverable items.
  • Assembly Integration and Test experience.
  • Careful and organised approach to tasks.
  • Practical engineer with hands on experience.
  • Evidence of taking ownership of problems/high level requirements.
  • Experience in overseas deployment.
  • Experience of close tolerance assembly techniques and standards.
  • Experience in writing and running engineering tests.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and skilled in MS Excel, word and PowerPoint.

Required Skills; Desirable

  • HALE, UAS or Satellite avionics experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technologies relevant to stratospheric avionics and payload design including thermal design, RF/optical datalinks, communication architectures and networks.
  • Capability to support subsystems such as power generation system, power storage system, propulsion, Ground Station systems.
  • Understanding of technologies relevant to Unmanned air systems (UAS).
  • Experience in a hands-on multi-skilled PCB design and manufacture.
  • Supervisory experience, able to coach and mentor new team members.
  • Experienced in aircraft maintenance records, recording systems
  • In depth knowledge of aviation policy and standards of practice
  • Understanding of secondary tasks associated to maintaining airworthiness
  • High levels of engineering hygiene and discipline.

Principal Terms and Conditions

  • Post – Permanent.
  • Salary – to be agreed depending on experience.
  • Pension – 10% contribution from the company included.
  • Leave – 25 days plus bank holidays.
  • Working time 37.5 hrs per week.
  • Location – Alton, Hampshire, UK.
