The Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum (FAST) FAST is proudly displaying the Zephyr 6 HALE UAV (High Altitude, Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). This aircraft, built in Farnborough, was the first solar powered HALE UAV to demonstrate a complete cycle of day-night solar power and rechargeable battery flight. Its last flight in 2008 set a World record endurance of any un-refuelled aircraft of 82 hours and it flew to an altitude of 61,000ft. 9 years later and only one aircraft has done better – and that of course is the Zephyr 7.
So, if you got excited about Facebook’s 100 minute flight to 3,000 ft and want to see a British aircraft that was twenty times better almost a decade ago, come along to FAST, open weekends and bank holidays, 10:00-16:00.
